Cargill, maker of Truvia, is bringing a new product to market, Barliv

Barliv is made from the fiber in barley. Apparently, they’ve altered this fiber enough in the lab that you cannot taste or feel this fiber in the foods that it will be added to. And their goal, of course, is to get it added to everything. Here’s the problem: barley has gluten and is a close relative of wheat, one of the top 8 allergens. I’ve been told that I should not be eating barley.  No mention on the web site or in their press release regarding the issue of gluten or this product being derived from one of the most common allergens. If Cargill was more forthcoming with consumers I’d call to find out, but given my experience with them on Truvia, I’ll just be avoiding this product as well.
